This is the second half of season 4 (the first was released on Family Guy Volume 3) that was released recently, I guess they broke up season 4 to two DVD sets to maximize profits. I should mention that these DVD’s are uncensored (meaning bad language, folks!) and there is a censored track for the kiddies out there. Really, there’s just a curse thrown in here or there and honestly I didn’t even notice it too much after the first time.
The Main Characters
The Griffin family is the main stars of this show. Peter is the father and could be considered by many to be borderline retarded. There are no barriers between his brain and his mouth and often what he is thinking is what comes out of his mouth. Lois is his wife and is a little more normal than Peter. She is his anchor. That is not saying much since she has an explosive temper and could go off at any time. Peter and Lois have three children; Chris, Meg and Stewie. Meg is the oldest and is shunned by the family and the world in general. Chris is overweight and perhaps even more absent minded than his father. Stewie is the most intelligent of them all, even though he’s only a baby. He has quite the dirty mouth and he’s always scheming. He usually has the most choice lines in the series, too. Brian rounds out the Griffin family. He is the most learned, most well-versed, most well-spoken, and is a dog. They are quite the dynamic, and dysfunctional family. Seth MacFarlane does the voices of Stewie, Peter and Brian (among others), Mila Kunis voices Meg, Seth Green handles Chris and Alex Borstein is Lois.
The Setting
Quahog, Rhode Island.
The Plots
---Disc One---
1) PTV (22:36)
After David Hyde Pierce has a wardrobe malfunction at the Emmys (his testicles were exposed), the FCC starts censoring everything (like the Dick Van Dyke show, or the ---- Van --- Show).Peter starts his own television station in rebuttal and his station (featuring the side-boob hour, Peter crapping off a bridge among other things, which was deleted from the air) infuriates Lois who calls the FCC on Peter. When the FCC starts censoring real-life and Lois finds out she can’t have sex, she goes over the edge and the Griffins go to Washington DC to protest and get rid of the ban. The real highlight of this episode though is the great Stewie vs. Osama Bin Laden bit at the beginning of the episode. Basically Osama tries to tape a threat to the US, messes up and has a good laugh about it before Stewie shows up, beats him, then drives his way to the oddest Family Guy opening sequence (featuring Homer Simpson to boot!) This was an awesome episode to kick off part two of Season four with a great song about the FCC, some great lines, cutaways (GW Bush shows up to Vietnam a little late, about 1981) and a good story overall about censorship. A.
2) Brian Goes Back To College (21:51)
Brian writes an article on the Quahog Television Convention and it is so well received he is invited to contribute to the New Yorker. When his fellow writers realize he never graduated college he is quickly kicked out and he finds he wants to graduate. So it’s off to college with his roommate (Stewie) and he tries to graduate. Of course, he fails, but he’s proud he failed on his own and didn’t cheat, to which his supportive family replies, “well maybe you should have.” Peter, Quagmire, Joe and Cleveland act as the A-Team for the episode as well, since they won the award for best costume at the Convention, but find they aren’t has helpful as they think they are. The A-Team stuff wasn’t too funny but Brian and Stewie at college made for some good moments. Callbacks to previous episodes (Stewie’s high-voices to Brian about the novel, Peter hurting his knee) were nice for long-time viewers, too. B+.
3) The Courtship of Stewie’s Father (21:37)
Stewie rededicates his effort to hurt Lois but fails every time. Lucky for Stewie, Lois is informed that he needs to spend more time with Peter. That would usually be cause for disaster but when Peter finds Stewie enjoys it when he hurts Lois, they start working together for some laughs. Lois ends up in a car at the bottom of the lake in their madness, but don’t worry, she’s alright. Peter stops hurting her and Stewie gets mad at Peter, so Peter does what any good father would, bring Stewie to Disney World and then lose him. Chris has to work for the old pervert when he accidentally breaks his window with a baseball and it’s every bit as creepy as you can imagine. One of the funniest moments was Soundwave (of Transformers fame) getting employee of the month. The episode didn’t really do anything as the storyline was pretty by the numbers and nothing caused me to laugh too hard. B-.
4) The Fat Guy Strangler (23:20)
Peter is crushed to learn that he is fat. Lois is shocked when she finds out she has a long-lost brother who is in an insane asylum. She busts him loose and as soon as he’s free, there seems to be a rash of obese fellows murdered! Yes, Lois’ brother is a fat-guy serial killer and Peter is next on the list. There was a really annoying part with the doctor and his shtick, which lasts forever, then the ball in a cup bit was equally annoying, and the fat people were just gross. The episode never got off its feet and really was bad from the beginning. The fat people were killed by Lois’ brother and she doesn’t want to admit it. That’s it. It was just a bad episode though the two highlights were Brian saying he was the one who found GW Bush after Katrina and then throwing a rock at Peter in retaliation for having the window rolled up on the General Lee (from the episode, “To Live and Die in Dixie.” C-.
5) The Father, The Son and the Holy Fonz (21:51)
Peter’s father is really concerned with Stewie getting baptized and Peter and Lois really aren’t religious and don’t care. The last straw is when Francis Griffin baptizes Stewie with tainted holy water and Stewie gets sick. He needs to be in a plastic ball while he heals. Peter gets fed up with his father’s Catholic religion and starts his own, where the Fonz is his god and shocks everyone when he starts getting followers! So Brian and Francis band together to get Peter off his high horse, with a very funny appearance by a fake Kirk Cameron. This was actually a very good social commentary on religion and its affects on people and how people can get fanatical about it. Very funny and relevant, too. B+.
---Disc Two---
6) Brian Sings and Swings (21:35)
Peter goes out to work in the morning and hits Brian with the car and that leads Brian down a path of depression and booze. His spirit seems to lift after meeting with Frank Sinatra Jr. and joining him on stage to sing and swing. Stewie joins him to form the new Rat Pack and things go well, until Brian’s drinking gets the better of him and abandons Stewie who gets his ear bitten off. Brian goes mad and bites Peter. Stewie eventually saves Brian, though. Meg joins a lesbian club and when she finds the lesbians accept her, she pretends to be gay so she can stay friends with them. She becomes really butch but Lois knows she’s pretending and busts her big time. Decent enough episode with some good gags and music. B+.
7) Patriot Games (21:51)
Brian loses $50 on the Carol Channing / Mike Tyson fight (Tyson loses) and when he doesn’t pay, Stewie beats the piss out of him in a gut-bustingly funny moment. Peter goes to his 25th high-school reunion and lies about what he really does. Of course, they find out he’s lying (he wasn’t really a millionaire astronaut cowboy) and his night is ruined, especially when he runs through a crowd of people to vomit. Tom Brady sees this and offers him a spot on the New England Patriots, then gets fired and sent to play for the London Silly Nannies. Of course, this ends up with the Silly Nannys playing the Patriots. The Stewie/Brian stuff was great but the Peter stuff was kind of boring, especially the song. Stewie and Brian save this episode. B.
8) I Take Thee Quagmire (22:13)
Peter goes on Wheel of Fortune and wins, and gets to pick out prizes from the prizes they had. They did this back in the late 80’s if you don’t remember and my Dad was on the show and actually got a ceramic pig (which he still has) and Peter gets a ceramic dog! Another thing he opts for is Free Maid Service for a Week. The maid comes and he takes full advantage of it, including getting his belly button cleaned. On the maid’s last day Cleveland, Joe and Quagmire meet the maid and Quagmire falls deeply in love with her and they are getting married! Now it’s up to Peter and gang to convince Quagmire he’s not in love but nothing works, until he sees Lois’ enlarged breasts (so enlarged since she’s stopped breast-feeding Stewie). So Quagmire realizes he’s made a mistake and so he fakes his own death to get out of it. Decent stuff from Quagmire, but the Stewie bit wasn’t too interesting. B.
9) Sibling Rivalry (23:06)
Lois doesn’t want to get pregnant again so she makes Peter get a vasectomy. Peter wants his sperm to live on so he donates some to a sperm bank. While there he knocks over all the sperm and a lesbian couple comes in for sperm. They get Peter’s sperm and nine months later Bertram (from Emissions Impossible) is born. Of course, this leads to Stewie and Bertram battling on the playground. Also, Peter doesn’t want to have sex because of the vasectomy and now Lois is getting fat. Peter doesn’t want to have sex since she’s fat but when they accidentally do, he finds himself very attracted to her and makes her fatter, so fat she has a heart attack. The singers singing about a vasectomy and how it’s done made for some good laughs. B+.
10) Deep Throats (23:24)
Meg gets a position as intern for Mayor West and the family really gets on Brian since he’s unemployed. Brian does manage to get a job as a cab driver. When he gets a ticket he wants to go to Mayor West to complain about its $400 fee. He and Stewie get information from a secret informant named Deep Throat (who is Kermit the Frog) and they catch Meg and Adam West in an affair. Brian tells Meg he’s going public with it and so Mayor West ends it with Meg to protect her. Thus ends Brian’s crusade. Lois and Peter enter a talent contest and in preparing for it get baked like they did in the old days. They end up sucking. One of the funniest themes of the show was Brian not picking up Cleveland, which caused for some great reactions by Cleveland. So-So episode where Cleveland, in his brief time on the show, was the highlight. C+.
---Disc Three---
11) Peterotica (22:14)
Peter reads an erotic book but doesn’t find it sexy. So he writes a nasty letter to the publisher and told him what he would write and is inspired to write his own story. He writes and publishes his work (with help from Carter Pewterschmidt) and his books are a raging success, until a man gets into an accident listening to one of the books. Carter is sued and loses all his money and doesn’t know how to live without his money. Peter tries to teach him how to live like a normal guy but Carter convinces him he needs to live like a rich guy so they vow to get rich. Luckily, Carter gets his money back and promptly shuns Peter. Not too bad of an episode, but just like the rest of this season, just mediocre. B.
12) You May Now Kiss The…Uh…Guy Who Receives (21:51)
Brian’s gay cousin Jasper comes home and has big news, he is getting married to Ricardo! Brian offers the Griffin house for the ceremony. Lois is unsure about it. Chris meets a girl who is a staunch Republican and is totally against Mayor West’s decision to honor the troops of Quahog with a giant gold statue of Dig ‘Em from the Smacks boxes. Mayor West wants to deflect the criticism by banning gay marriages and now Jasper is beyond console. Brian gets a petition going to change Mayor West’s mind and Chris’ girlfriend telling Chris to destroy it. It all ends with Brian holding West hostage and getting the bill overturned when Lois realizes that even gays should get married. There were some funny moments amongst the political overtones, which makes this a keeper. B+.
13) Petergeist (23:23)
Joe builds a home theater in his home and airs Rocky VI, Rocky vs. the Martians. So Peter has to one-up by building a multi-plex and while building in his backyard finds an ancient Indian burial ground. Brian suggests he put the Indian skull back but he doesn’t and plays around with it (including peeing in the skull). The Indian gods don’t like this and soon a poltergeist takes over the house and kidnaps Stewie through the television! The only way out is through Meg’s ass. This was a very good episode that had everything (A LOTR reference that was hysterical, awesome Poltergeist references, even Hank Hill!) and shows that sometimes just doing a straight-up story with few flashbacks or cutaway can work. A.
14) The Griffin Family History (23:20)
This ended Season 4 of Family Guy and like “Viewer Mail,” from the end of Season 3, it is definitely an off-beat episode. When men break into the Griffin house, the family retreats to the Panic Room Peter installed. While there Peter tells of the Griffin family history where basically we see Griffins all through history, the Big Bang was God farting, evolution (including Kansas’ evolution theory), dinosaurs, cavemen, Moses Griffin, Nate Griffin’s roots, silent film star Black-Eye Griffin, and Peter Hitler, Adolph’s favorite brother. Along the way they send Meg out for food and help and the criminals kidnap which leads to some very funny things. She wants the crooks to have their way with her and that causes a lawsuit against Meg for sexual harassment. It is just very different from what they did this season and I thought it was a good way to end the season. A.
Season 4.5 Review
So Season 4 was separated into two collections, volume 3 and 4. Which one is better? If you could get only one which one would it be? That’s a tough choice. I think Volume 3 had some better episodes but Volume 4 only had maybe 2 misses out of 14 shows. Volume 3 had a lot more sub-standard episodes than Volume 4. Pound for pound Volume 4 pulls through with some very solid Family Guy action and is book ended by some great episodes. Strictly talking about Volume 4 of the DVD now, the second half of Season 4 saw great improvement in terms of writing over the first half. I thought they found their groove towards the end of the first half (remember there was a 3 year layoff between production of episodes) and it really carries through in this collection. Like I said, there aren’t any real bad episodes so watching this collection is enjoyable. Volume 3 got a B- from me while this collection will one-up that and get a B.
DVD Features
A) Extras
---Disc One---
1) Audio Commentaries
---A) PTV
Seth MacFarlane, Chris Sheridan, Mila Kunis, Alec Sulkin, Wellesley Wild and Dan Povenmire are on this commentary. Seth says the opening segment was thrown in because the episode was way too short so they recorded this, and just sort of riffed and ad-libbed this part. They mention the crapping on TV part that was cut out of the original airing and they mention you can talk about masturbation but not a poo joke. While recording the commentary, Mila’s friend Hugh called. This was great fun.
---B) Brian Goes Back To College
Seth MacFarlane, David A. Goodman, Alex Borstein, Matt Fleckenstein and Greg Colton are on this commentary. Alex mentions that her mother owned a store that made chocolate penises and breasts. Very good commentary, again. Two good ones in a row. They keep things interesting and keep the flow of the commentary going. Alex was very funny, too.
---C) The Courtship of Stewie’s Father
Seth MacFarlane, David A. Goodman, Mike Henry, and Kirker Butler are on this commentary. Kirker says he can’t understand why someone would listen to a commentary or who has time for it. Seth is hilarious recounting when he got Soundwave for Christmas and the guys reactions. Not as good as the first two but still good.
---D) The Fat Guy Strangler
Seth MacFarlane, Chris Sheridan, Alec Sulkin, Wellesley Wild and Sarah Frost are on this commentary. Sarah is British but doesn’t talk much. The fat guy anthem was not aired on the television show but it is included here on the DVD. One of them says this bit is boring. Word up, bro. Decent enough commentary.
---E) The Father, The Son, and the Holy Fonz
Seth MacFarlane, David A. Goodman, Chris Sheridan, Danny Smith, James Purdum and Kara Vallow are on this commentary. One interesting thing they talk about is a Stewie New Orleans joke that was written before Katrina then they got the animation back from Korea and were horrified at the joke. They originally had a crucified Fonz but that was cut.
2) Multi-Angle Scene Study
---A) PTV (3:33)
This is split-screen of the actual aired animation with the animatic. In this case we look at the great opening scene with Osama and Stewie, though it ends before the opening credits.
---B) Brian Goes Back to College (1:03)
This is the CGI A-Team animatic split screen, which imitates the A-Team opening.
3) Optional Censored Track
---A) Brian Goes Back to College
---B) The Fat Guy Strangler
---Disc Two---
1) Audio Commentaries
---A) Brian Sings and Swings
Seth MacFarlane, David A. Goodman, Frank Sinatra Jr., Zac Moncrief, and Shannon Smith are on this commentary. The legendary Frank Sinatra Jr. joins us on this commentary, and he’s kind of boring. They talk a lot about the music, especially Family Guy being one of the only shows to record with full orchestras and in America.
---B) Patriot Games
Seth MacFarlane, Mike Henry, Cyndi Tang, Dan Povenmire and Mike Elias are on this commentary. Seth says people complained about the Stewie beat-down scene since they said what they did to Brian was so mean. Seth’s mom couldn’t understand the problem since Brian owed Stewie money! They mention at the end that this was one of the most polarizing episodes in that they either hated or loved the Shipoopi segment and the violence. Not terribly interesting, either.
---C) I Take Thee Quagmire
Seth MacFarlane, David A. Goodman, Steve Callaghan, Pete Michaels, Darrel Heath and Alex Thomas are on this commentary. Darrel Heath is a riot on this commentary and you can tell he’s just a fun guy to be around. This was a fun one and entertaining one to listen to.
---D) Sibling Rivalry
Seth MacFarlane, David A. Goodman, Mike Henry, Cherry Chevapravatdumrong and Dan Povenmire are on this commentary. They talk about Cherry’s name right away and Mike sings it to the tune of Carry on My Wayward Son. The car-driving scene was cut from TV. They call their vowel joke a bit clunky, or a manatee joke according to South Park. Good commentary.
---E) Deep Throats
Seth MacFarlane, Alex Borstein, Mila Kunis, Greg Colton, Ron Jones and Patrick Clark are on this commentary. Alex says the episode is really funny then Seth reminds her that she wrote it. Alex says the Peter song gets her and her husband hot. The person who animated the cars worked on Celebrity Deathmatch and Robot Chicken. Stewie was originally watching Alice but they wouldn’t allow the rights to the show since as the song, as Seth says, is fucking sacred. They show a naked Lois and Peter on the couch where when it aired they had clothes. They mention Lois is well-groomed down there. They ask Mila if she’d date someone 60 years older than her and she said she would if he was Batman. Great commentary that was better than the actual episode.
2) Multi-Angle Scene Study
---A) Patriot Games (2:33)
This scene studies the Shipoopi number, which I am not a fan of.
---B) Sibling Rivalry (1:09)
This scene is the duel between Stewie and Bertram.
3) Optional Censored Track
---A) Brian Sings and Swings
---B) Sibling Rivalry
---Disc Three---
1) Audio Commentaries
---A) Peterotica
Seth MacFarlane, David A. Goodman, Patrick Meighan, Mike Elias, Kim Fertman, and Andrew Goldberg are on this commentary. They again mention South Park and them riffing on the fact their jokes are interchangeable. They talk about the book titles and one not making it, Catcher In The Eye, which didn’t make it because it was the third semen joke. They say this episode has one of the darkest endings in Family Guy history.
---B) You May Now Kiss The…Uh…Guy Who Receives
Seth MacFarlane, David A. Goodman, Chris Sheridan, Seth Green, Danny Smith and Dominic Polcino are on this commentary. They didn’t really include anything too interesting but they were very entertaining overall, especially Seth Green. Seth M mentions again that the voices of Carter and the Dr. are the same. Good commentary.
---C) Petergeist
Seth MacFarlane, Alec Sulkin, Wellesley Wild, Sarah Frost, Charles Song and A. Spencer Porter are on this commentary. They said that this used one of the biggest orchestra’s in the show’s history. They talk about Carrot Top being freakishly in shape and improving his stand-up routine. Good commentary.
---D) The Griffin Family History
Seth MacFarlane, David A. Goodman, John Viener, Zac Moncrief, and Mike Elias are on this commentary. They talk about the dinosaur bit being cut from the air for time and Zac relates a funny story of him showing up as part of the crew for the first time. The commentator’s bicker back and forth about The Godfather and Seth says “Peggy Sue Gets Married” is a better Coppola film. Good commentary and almost all of them have been winners.
2) Optional Censored Track
---A) You May Now Kiss The…Uh…Guy Who Receives
---B) Petergeist
3) A Director’s Life: Debunking The Myth (13:51)
This feature tells what its like to direct an animated show. They say they do not only the job of the director, that of the cameraman and actor as well since they have to know what is going on from composing the shot to where the characters are moving. Everything has to be carefully mapped out beforehand. Interesting look at what the director’s do.
4) Peter Shin Draws Stewie (4:47)
Peter shows us, in less than five minutes, how to draw Stewie Griffin. He draws it with a sharpie, too. He’s a real pro.
5) Behind The Scenes: A Glimpse Into The Family Guy Office (7:14)
Adam West drops by the office and Mike Henry brings him to the booth and then shows him around, and we see all the writers, artists, and everything else. Adam asks where the footage will end up and Mike says it’ll be on the DVD and thanks us for buying the DVD.

B) Audio/Video
The video is done in Dolby Digital Surround 5.1. It’s a cartoon television show so the surrounds aren’t really needed. It’s a standard DVD TV release. The video is nice as well. It is better than on TV since it’s in a digital format so that is all you can ask from a set like this. The audio/video is much better than anything else seen on previous volumes, actually.
C) Liner Notes
The three DVD’s are in slimline cases with the episode descriptions on the back, but other than that, there are no liner notes. There is a Family Guy booklet of stuff they have for sale and a Mobizzo.com ad for Family Guy voice tones and backgrounds.
D) Easter Eggs
None
Overall Review
I think the season content speaks for itself. I think this DVD set is one of the best ones they’ve put out. The 14 commentaries were for the most part excellent which is a huge improvement over the first 2 volumes and a lot better than the ones on Volume 3 even. There are tons of deleted scenes, a pretty good look at what the director’s do, an enjoyable Peter Shin segment and a tour of the office given to Adam West as well as us. The extras were different than what we have seen before and overall this is the best collection Family Guy has released.
